We drove west across Kentucky, stopping in Frankfort to view the State Capitol. We then followed the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, touring the Maker's Mark Distillery and the Jim Beam American Stillhouse. We also visited Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park and the Lincoln boyhood home site. After spending an evening exploring Mammoth Cave National Park, we spent the night in the historic park cottages.
The next morning, we took the 'Historic' tour of the cave, going through the natural cave entrance. After driving north to Louisville, we toured the Kentucky Derby Museum, and watched a horse race at Churchill Downs. We also attended mass at the Cathedral of the Assumption and walked along the Ohio River through Waterfront Park before enjoying a great dinner at Doc Crow's Southern Smokehouse.
